As warm weather approaches, there are some precautions to keep in mind for your pets...

Always give your pet access to shade and fresh water.  Put yourself in their place wearing a fur coat and think about how you would feel.  If you would be uncomfortable, they are too.  Most people know by now not to leave Fido in the car when temperatures outside are warm.  Pets heat up quickly with their fur coats.  They do not perspire but cool off through panting which is not efficient at cooling the body in an overheated car.

When exercising your pets, think about how hot the asphalt or concrete surfaces are.  Try to exercise pets early or later in the day.  Carry water bottles for frequent small drinks.  Pets can get sunburn, skin cancer, heat stroke and other damage caused by exposure to the sun's rays and heat.  Check regularly for fleas and ticks as well as other foreign debris all over their body and between toes.

Lawn and garden products can be toxic to our furry friends so keep such items stored away from pets.  Be careful of using these products around your pets as well.  Read all directions carefully and keep your pets off surfaces treated with toxic products.  Non-toxic products are available for lawns and gardens so do a little research to ensure the safety of your critters as well as the wild ones and protect the environment at the same time.  It's a good idea to rinse your pets' paws off after walks to get rid of residue from lawn products left on sidewalks and yards.  Also be cautious of dyed wood mulches.  Cocoa mulch is known to be fatal if ingested by pets.  Do a little research on the toxic outdoor plants and make sure your pets do not have access to them in your yard.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  Your pet would thank you for it if he could.
What Breed is Best for you!

So you're browsing the local shelter for a new pup (good for you!) and a  little black ball of fur catches your eye and dazzles you. Within moments, he has you wrapped around his adorable paw. Licking your face, nuzzling your neck, it's decided. This bushy ball of love is coming home with you... the newest member of your family!

What a shame, if after living with him for a few months, you found he was impossibly out of control, always running away from you, not very friendly with your kids. Could be, the breed was totally wrong for you. Maybe you're not providing him with the proper outlet, if you brought home a working or hunting breed. He may not be getting enough exercise only in your backyard. After looking at the breeds available in your local shelters, you can do research easily online for information about the breed or dominant breed of the dogs available.

The best breed selector test I've found online is at, http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselector.do. You'll get a large variety of breeds to choose from, and probably learn about breeds you've never heard of! Information on each breed includes general breed statistics, history, temperament, upkeep, health, including suggested tests and life span, form and function, and related dogs.

Once you've found your favorite, you'll want to check your local shelters to find a pet in need. If your favorite few breeds aren't available locally, check out rescue groups that specialize in specific breeds at http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm.

Remember that each dog breed is different. All dog breeds require time and traning others you will have to dedicate to grooming.  Please make sure you are making the right decision when you choose which dog breed is right for you.
