Summer Hot Weather Tips for your Pooch!

 * Don't leave your dog in a parked car, even with the  windows partially down. Even on a mild 73 degree day, the inside temperature can rise to 120 in half an hour. When the outside temp is 78, a car left in the sun can reach an inside temperature of 160 in just a few minutes. A dog can succumb to heatstroke in only 15 minutes. Don't take that chance.

* Be sure to provide plenty of fresh clean water at all times.

*If it is too hot for you to walk barefoot on the sidewalk, it is too hot for your dog. Don't walk or exercise your dog in the heat of the day. They are closer to the asphalt/concrete than humans and the
reflected heat affects them much more, and the heat of the pavement can burn their feet.

*Snub nosed (brachycephalic) breeds such as Bulldogs, Pekes, Boston Terriers, Lhasa Apsos, etc. are especially susceptible to heat related illness. Dogs cool themselves by panting and circulating air through their nasal passages. The shortened snout on the brachycephalic breeds is inefficient in the cooling process.

* If your dog is outside, make sure they have a shady spot, other than inside a dog house in full sunlight. If at all possible, bring them inside during the hottest part of the day.

* Full coated dogs should be brushed to get rid of excess fur. Extremely long haired dogs can be cut to about a one inch length to prevent overheating. Cutting closer than that robs the dog of protection from sunburn. Consult your vet on this.

*Pale and short haired dogs are susceptible to sunburn on the nose, ear tips, abdomen, groin, and inner leg area. These last three areas are due to upward reflected sunlight from pavement or sand. Avoid having your dog outside in peak sunlight hours---noon to 3PM, & use vet approved sun block on the nose and ear tips. Consult your vet for
approved sun block on the areas which your dog would be able to lick.
